Interview with Zach Threat, bassist for Violent Affair 11/11/2011

Violent Affair are a street punk band started in 2007 in Oklahoma City. You can check out their latest album Stand Trial and see them December 3rd at Mugfest, and December 8th at the Conservatory. violentaffair.com

Talk about the Oklahoma punk scene, is it connected or is there tension amongst the subgenres? And then does it differ from city to city?

The punk scene really comes and goes in waves here in Oklahoma. It always has. One minute everybody is friends and everybody is sharing gear and putting on each other’s shows, the next everybody hates each other and nobody goes to shows. It’ll probably always be that way. City to city it’s hard to tell. Everybody seems pretty cool. Austin is the only city I’ve ever played that really had tension between the kids and the clubs.

What do you enjoy about playing shows around here? And then compared to going on tour?

We were all born and raised here, so playing on the same stages that we grew up watching our local heroes play on, is just mind blowing. It’s intense and it’s fun and we hope that we’re inspiring kids to carry the torch after we’re gone.

What have you learned about cross country tours? The difficulties? The good things?

Tour is a different world, we love to get out and meet our fans, they’re the reason we do this, we want to know more about the people who listen to our music and come to our shows. We have a diverse crowd..ex-military, college students, junkies, hell one of our fans is a massage therapist. It’s just crazy the amount of diversity that’s out there. I personally have been on two tours, west coast and east coast. The boys did a little stint up in the midwest before I was in the band.

Touring is probably the most stressful and difficult thing a band can do. Every band dreams about going on the road and living the rock star life but it’s hard. There are nights where the crowd is really into what you have to say, everybody is buying you beers and there’s a warm place to stay. Sometimes your van breaks down and everybody gets a little rough around the edges. There are fights, there are people threatening to quit, but it’s all apart of it, and at the end of every tour we’re always ready to get back out there and do it again. There’s no better way of living.

What do you guys have coming up? Is your new music similar to your older stuff, any tours?

Upcoming events: MugFest December 3rd at the Roxy theatre in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Super fun annual festival that our friends the Dirty Mugs put on. It’s just a showcase of all the oklahoma punk bands.

We’re playing with german street punks SS Kaliert and 80s American Hardcore legends Verbal Abuse at the conservatory on december 8th. Super pumped to get the chance to play with SSK again, they were the first band Violent Affair ever played with.

We have a 7” in the works. The “call to arms” EP. It’s a step in a different direction. We’re all still driven by the same influences but with the return of our old guitarist Jesse Leper and the addition of Domenic (ex-The Rippers, The Scumbags) we have a new edge and a new definitive sound that we’re really proud of. We’ve started to touch base on other genres that influence us, we’re excited to see the response.

We highly recommend the following: David Johnson of Johnson Audio and Ryan Wallace of AMP Studios in Tulsa. both are great at what they do.

MugFest is a yearly punk festival in Muskogee, OK. They first set it up to play their first show and now do it yearly to celebrate their anniversary. The line-up isn’t confirmed this year, but we’re definitely playing and the partying is just as much a reason to go as the music. Definitely do not miss it.
